Unfortunately, Germans often come across as slightly or even very impolite in international business situations. Why is this? One of the reasons is that many German speakers are good at grammar, but bad at using “softeners”.
Do you use fabric softener when you do
You can, or you can leave it out. But you can’t leave out softeners in your language, especially when you are telling someone you don’t agree with them.
Here are some softeners from Business English Today, when you want to say you have a different opinion. Use them to sound more polite – and to give German businesspeople a better name!

- I’m really sorry I can’t agree with you there.
- I think I can safely say that ...
- I am not entirely convinced that ...
- I hate having to point this out, but ...
- I wish it were that straightforward.
- Can I just tell you why I think this won’t work?
