Collective nouns are nouns that denote a group of individuals – for example team, crew, family, staff, committee, government or police. In the U.S., collective nouns are usually followed by a singular verb (Our staff is glad to help. / The crowd was nervous.)
In Britain, there is generally more choice. You can follow a collective noun with a plural verb depending on whether you see the group as an entity or as a bunch of individuals.
